What is SMP?

Scalp Micro-Pigmentation, or SMP as it is commonly known, is a medical tattoo process that promotes an appearance of naturally growing hair for people who are balding or have thinning hair. In this method, the pigment dots replicate the appearance of hair follicles or stubbles of hair. They are extremely discrete and are comparable in diameter to that of a single hair or follicular unit.

Smp can be effectively utilized in conjunction with  hair transplant surgery in several ways to enhance the overall result of a hair transplant.  Patients can achieve more comprehensive and satisfying results, transforming their overall look and boosting confidence.

What Can SMP Do?

Camouflage Scars

SMP seamlessly blends scars from previous hair transplant surgeries (like FUT or FUE) or injuries into the surrounding scalp. This allows patients to comfortably shave their heads without the fear of visible scarring.

Enhance Hair Density

For individuals with thinning hair, SMP creates the illusion of thicker, denser hair—even in areas where transplants may not have fully taken hold.

Fill in Gaps Post-Transplant

Used after hair transplant surgery, SMP can cover any areas with limited graft survival, offering a more complete and polished final result.

Support Thinning Hairlines

In cases of receding hairlines or thinning edges, SMP restores a stronger hairline appearance while waiting for transplanted hair to mature.

SMP for Scar Camouflage

SMP can conceal scars from previous hair transplant surgeries or other scalp injuries. By tattooing pigment over the scars, it creates a seamless appearance, blending them with the surrounding scalp. Many patients are intimidated at the thought of shaving their donor area prior to FUE in fear of exposing old FUT scaring. SMP can be combined with the surgery to camouflage those scars making recovery significantly easier to manage.

SMG provides expert quality scalp micropigmentation treatments to help you conceal your scars. 75 – 85% improvement in the appearance of scarring after your scalp micropigmentation treatment. On average, most clients see a significant improvement in their scar concealment after 3 SMP camouflage sessions.

FUE Scar CamouflageFUE scar camouflage. SMP can be highly effective for FUE scars as well. By creating the appearance of tiny hair follicles, SMP can make the dot-like scars nearly invisible, especially when combined with a closely cropped hairstyle. Combining Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) with Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the most effective way to camouflage scars from hair transplant procedures.

SMP for Women

SMP is an effective solution for women with hair thinning or hair loss. It is a non-surgical, non-invasive, and cost-effective option that can help to boost confidence and improve self-esteem.

Creating the Illusion of Hair Density

Scalp Pigmentation can create the illusion of hair density by closely mimicking the appearance of hair follicles. This can help to create the appearance of fuller hair, even in areas where hair is thinning.

Covering Thinning Hair Patches

SMP can be used to cover bald patches caused by hair loss or thinning. By depositing pigment into the scalp, micropigmentation can create the appearance of hair follicles and cover areas where hair has been lost.

Camouflaging Scalp Shine

Women with hair thinning or hair loss may experience scalp shine, where the scalp is visible through the hair. Micropigmentation can help to camouflage scalp shine by creating the illusion of hair follicles, making the scalp less visible.

Non-Surgical Solution

SMP is a non-invasive, non-surgical solution to hair loss. There is no scarring, and recovery time is minimal.

SMP For The Shaved Look

SMP can be used to create he appearance of a shaved head, even if you don’t actually shave your head.

SMP + Regenerative Medicine

SMP can enhance the results of regenerative medicine by creating the illusion of denser hair and camouflaging scars, while regenerative medicine can promote hair regrowth and improve the overall condition of the scalp.

SMP as an Enhancer
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic treatment that simulates the look of natural hair follicles by precisely implanting pigment into the scalp. This versatile technique can effectively camouflage scars from hair transplants and other procedures, while also creating the illusion of thicker, denser hair—even in areas where regrowth is limited.

Regenerative Medicine as a Foundation
Regenerative medicine encompasses treatments that aim to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes to promote hair growth, such as:

  • Stem cell therapy (exosomes): Involves using stem cells to promote hair follicle regeneration.
  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy: Involves injecting concentrated platelets into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.
  • TED: Is a revolutionary, non-invasive NEW treatment that uses ultrasound, low level laser, and air pressure to deliver proteins and peptides to increase follicular strength and regrowth.

What Does The SMP Treatment Timetable Look Like?

It is important to note that all skin is different, and no provider can promise that a specific number of treatments will be enough to complete your desired look.

Most standard patients will need a minimum of three/four sessions to complete their treatment. But, patients with substantial scaring, diseases of the scalp, who are combining SMP with hair transplant or other hair loss procedures may require additional sessions to complete their treatment.

 SMP Recipient and Crown
Both a shaved look and a density effect procedures are completed over a series of four  sessions spaced approximately 2-6 weeks apart. And your ideal outcome will be achieved after the final session. Each session is two days. They can be performed two consecutive days in a row. Or one time a week for two consecutive weeks.  But keep in mind that each treatment plan is individual and there is  room for flexibility.

SMP Scar Camouflage
Camouflaging Scars requires a slightly different treatment schedule because of the delicate nature of scar tissue. It is imperative that the impressions in the scar tissue have a chance to heal between each session as to avoid pigment migration. And so we can monitor any pigment rejection issues and keep your treatment very strategic. The treatment schedule for scar camouflaging is four sessions that will be a combination of one- and two-day appointments all scheduled approximately 4-6 weeks apart.

SMP Combined with surgery
This treatment plan will vary from patient to patient and can not be anticipated ahead of time. We will make the plan with your physician based on your goals at during your consultation.

Why Multiple Sessions?

SMP is both a technical and artistic procedure. Each session involves up to 14,000 micro-insertions, carefully adapted to each unique scalp:

  • Every patient’s skin reacts differently
  • Scar tissue, blood flow, and pigment retention vary
  • Some fading or pigment rejection is natural and anticipated

A single session cannot deliver a natural, durable result—which is why top-tier clinics always recommend multiple treatments.
